Thyroid || Thyroid functions || Thyroid diseases || थाइरोइड

According to the latest research in India, there are more than 4 crore people are suffering from thyroid diseases and statistics says it will increase in upcoming years more and more. We have to know firstly how important is our thyroid is to our life and its optimal functioning.

The thyroid is a gland in our body, mainly it is a type of endocrine gland( endocrine glands are those glands which release their produced hormone directly to the bloodstream). The thyroid is small and light gland, in healthy adults it approximately weighted 25g. The thyroid gland looks like a butterfly from the front view and it is located at the front of the neck, below Adam's apple.

The thyroid gland produces three very important hormones which are:-

1. Triiodothyronine (T3)

2. Thyroxine (T4)

3. Calcitonin.

Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4) are the iodine-containing hormones, here in Triiodothyronine 3 atoms of iodine is present per molecule, and in Thyroxine 4 atoms of iodine is present per molecule, while Calcitonin is a peptide hormone, which regulates the calcium level in our blood.

The quantity and the timing of the release of thyroid hormone are regulated by Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), TSH is released by our pituitary gland situated in our brain.

FUNCTIONS OF THYROID GLAND ARE:-

1.) Thyroid hormone control metabolic rate which means the rate of energy expenditure. A well functioning thyroid hormone increases the metabolism and increases our basal metabolic rate (the calories spent by our body for our survival).

2. Protein synthesis.

3. Breakdown of fats.

4. Regulate body temperature.

5. Regulate the rate of breathing, oxygen consumption, the rate of heartbeat.

6. Reduces bad cholesterol.

7. Increase appetite.

The bottom line is that the thyroid hormone affects almost every cell of our body. That's why the thyroid is so important to us.

Types of thyroid diseases are:-

1. Hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a disease in which our thyroid gland is producing less thyroid hormone then our body needs, thus it is an underactive thyroid gland, it causes very slow metabolism.

2. Hyperthyroidism

In hyperthyroidism is a disease in which our thyroid gland is producing more thyroid hormone then our body needs, thus it is an overactive thyroid gland, it causes very fast metabolism.

Both underactive and overactive thyroid gland is dangerous for our health, thus we need optimal performing thyroid gland.

You can say that your thyroid gland is in optimal condition when the TSH level in your blood is within the range 0.4 to 4 milli International unit per litre of blood. If TSH is above 4 milli International unit per litre of blood then your thyroid is underactive, you are suffering from hypothyroidism when the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormones the pituitary gland releases more TSH in blood to try to stimulate it. A value below 0.4 milli International units per litre of blood indicates that your thyroid is overactive, you are suffering from hyperthyroidism when the thyroid is producing too much thyroid hormone, the pituitary gland releases less TSH in the bloodstream.
